Ethical Responsible AI Use
As educators and staff, we play a vital role in shaping the future by modeling ethical and responsible use of AI. This involves being transparent about how and when we use AI tools, properly crediting AI-generated content, and ensuring that all material aligns with our educational objectives and standards. Protecting confidentiality is crucial—never enter sensitive data into AI tools, including student records, employee information, or any personally identifiable details. Our actions serve as a model for students; what we do speaks louder than what we say.
Tool Approval and Age-Appropriate Use
To maintain safety and security, staff members are only permitted to use AI tools that have been thoroughly vetted and approved by MNSD. These selected tools have met strict district standards regarding privacy, security, and confidentiality, and comply with applicable state and federal laws. Additionally, many AI tools have age restrictions in their terms of service or privacy policies.
The list of approved applications can be found HERE.

When using AI tools with students, it is the staff’s responsibility to clearly communicate when AI should not be used in completing learning tasks. Clear guidelines and open communication are essential in promoting responsible AI usage. When outlining guidelines for student use, consider the wide variations of AI capabilities and the purpose of the learning task (standards being addressed). Ensure that students understand and follow age-related restrictions.
AI Detection and Academic Integrity
Our goal is to promote a culture of academic integrity and original thought, rather than simply catching instances of dishonesty. While AI detection tools are widely available and often advertised as a tool for identifying plagiarism or AI-generated work, the reality is that these tools are unreliable and often result in false indications of plagiarism/AI-generation. Therefore, AI detection tools should not be the sole basis for identifying AI use. Regular feedback cycles in the classroom and seeing progress towards learning tasks over time are effective methods to uphold academic integrity.

AI Student Guidelines
Students must adhere to school and teacher guidelines regarding AI use. Teachers will specify which AI tools are allowed, how they can be used, and what types of content are appropriate for AI generation. Students must follow the Artificial Intelligence AI policy (PO7540.08) whenever they use AI tools, just as they should when using any other information technology resources.
Considerations when using AI:
|
Students should respect the privacy of others and avoid sharing personal information with AI tools. This includes personal contact information, sensitive personal data, and any other information that could be used to harm or exploit others.
Students should understand the limitations of AI and use it appropriately. AI is not a substitute for human intelligence, and it is not capable of performing all tasks. Students should use AI in ways that are consistent with its capabilities and limitations
Students should develop the ability to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated information. This includes checking the information against other sources, considering the potential for bias, and recognizing the limitations of AI.
Enhancement, Not Replacement
AI should be used as a tool to enhance learning, not to replace critical thinking. Students should use AI to support their research, analysis, and writing, but they should not rely on AI to do their thinking for them. For example, the "Human AI Human" model is a good guideline for responsible AI use. This model emphasizes the importance of human involvement in the AI process. When students use AI, they should start with their own inquiry, use AI as a tool to support their work, and then finish with their own reflection and analysis.
