The Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers college level courses and examinations to high school students. The underlying premise of the Advanced Placement Program is that college level courses can be successfully taught to high school students by high school teachers on high school campuses. Advanced Placement courses make it possible for academically talented students to upgrade the quality and increase the challenge for their studies, both in high school and in college.
The AP Program consists of teaching the course identified by the College Board as college level in content and affording students an opportunity to write an examination for that given course. Students who take an AP course are expected to take the AP exam for that course, as administered by the College Board. Advanced Placement examinations are offered annually to give high school students opportunities to demonstrate college level achievement. Based on the score the student receives on that particular examination and the specific college or university that student chooses to attend, college credit, advanced standing, or course waiver may be offered to that student. Students may also choose to take an AP exam without taking the AP class. Please see your counselor for details.
Students enrolled in these courses will be expected to perform at a rigorous level of competence and should anticipate a significant amount of additional work outside of class. Students may need to complete work during the summer for AP classes. The grades earned in courses designated as Advanced Placement (AP) will carry a weighted value (.05) per semester, when a student’s grade point average is calculated.
