ME’s Community Garden
During wolf pack time in the 2011-12 school year, Muskego Elementary students spent the year learning about various organizations within their community. At the conclusion of that school year students proposed an idea about how they wanted to help their community. They suggested planting a garden and donating the vegetables to the Muskego Food Pantry. Staff met that summer to talk about how to make the students’ vision a reality. The Muskego Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) was contacted and has since become a strong partner in financially supporting the upstart and maintenance of the garden. Throughout the school year, the students and staff learned how to grow and care for vegetables and planned what to plant in the garden boxes.
In the Spring of 2013 all students and staff of Muskego Elementary participated in planting a variety of vegetables and herbs in our ten garden boxes. To date, Muskego Elementary School families sign up to rotate caring for the garden throughout the summer months. The harvest continues to be donated to the Muskego Food Pantry. Over the past two summers, the Muskego Elementary Community Garden has been a success, harvesting more than 422 pounds of vegetables for Muskego families!
