History - The Temporary School That Stayed
In 1987, due to an increase in the numbers of elementary age students, the School Board decided that an addition be added to the East wing of Bay Lane Middle School. This addition and some of the middle school rooms of this wing would become Country Meadows Elementary School.
We had 235 students (K-5); nine regular education teachers; part time reading, learning facilitator, LD and Speech/Language teachers; three aides; one secretary; and one administrator. We shared music and art teachers with Bay Lane, and gym teachers with another elementary school. Lunch room, library, computer lab and gym facilities were shared with the middle school.
This was a temporary (one to two years) solution to handle a growing elementary population. A new, permanent Country Meadows would be built at a later time.
We stayed! More than twenty five years later, Country Meadows Elementary is proud of over two decades of high student achievement. In the 2013-14 school year, CM has 328 students (K-4) including many early childhood students. We are also in our fourth year of partership with Discovery Days Child Care to serve our four-year-old kindergarten students. Our staff has grown to twelve (K-4) teachers, many special education teachers and aides, specials teachers, an administrative assistant and a principal. While we still share some space with the middle school, we now have our own gym, music room, art room and section of the library.
Today, Country Meadows Elementary School is a strong and thriving school with a supportive and caring relationship with our families and the community. We look forward to providing a high quality educational experience for the children of our district for many years to come.
