The Muskego-Norway primary teachers have begun the seventh year of the implementation of the Literacy Benchmark Assessment Program. The Literacy Benchmark Assessments provide a standard or repeatable way of comparing a child’s performance over a period of time. To develop an overall picture of a child’s reading behavior, teachers observe the child in a variety of reading and writing contexts. The tasks enable teachers to observe children at work noting their responses. Teachers then summarize where children are in their development of reading, writing and spelling, and use this as the foundation for what children are ready to learn next.
